Total solar eclipse: Who will be able to see it, when is it and why does it happen?

A total solar eclipse will dazzle people across North America in what’s been described as “our planet’s greatest spectacle“. The perfect alignment of Earth, the sun and the moon, which is due to be seen on 8 April, will plunge much of the continent into darkness.
