African Union Says No to ECOWAS Military Plans to Invade Niger
African Union Says No to ECOWAS Military Plans to Invade Niger - Following the unsuccessful implementation of any intervention within the 7-day ultimatum against Niger’s junta, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) turned to the African Union to seek additional support. Unfortunately, plans of the ECOWAS to intervene militarily in Niger and restore democracy through the use of force have been rejected by the African Union.
On Monday, the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, the body responsible for enforcing the organization’s resolutions, convened in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to discuss the challenging situation in Niger. An African diplomat characterized the discussions and the present circumstances as “difficult“. This decision was made after an intense 10-hour session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council. Several diplomats present at the meeting have confirmed that the African Union has firmly turned down the idea of using military action in Niger.
