Miles Davis Band, Avery Fisher Hall June 21, 1985 w/ John Scofield
This was the only time I saw Miles Davis in concert. A Miles Davis show in New York City was an event with a capital E. He was playing as part of the city-wide Kool Jazz Festival. The crowd was packed, loud, and into the music, and the band was louder, and played with relentless energy for more than two hours. As well as the high energy Miles Davis compositions were received, Miles brought the house down with two pop covers, Michael Jackson’s Human Nature and Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. A lot of time has passed since this show. John Scofield, now an elder statesman of Jazz, was a young (early 30s) brash gunslinger, who played like his life depended on it (as did the entire band).
The sound quality of this recording is not up to the typical standards I require to upload to YouTube, but I couldn’t find this show anywhere on YouTube, and this is Miles Davis after all, so I am posting this for the hardcore completists out there who may want to hear every Miles show they can. Avery Fisher Hall (now called David Geffen Hall) is part of the Lincoln Center at 66th Street in Manhattan, and was a big boomy auditorium mostly used by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It was recently renovated to improve its acoustics (the name change to Geffen Hall reflects his large donation to pay for the update).
