LIVE: Activists hold rally for women’s rights in Istanbul

Women’s rights activists are holding a rally in Istanbul on Saturday, November 27, to push for the implementation of laws against domestic violence and femicide. On Thursday, November 26, protesters took to the streets of Istanbul to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and were met with tear gas and rubber bullets by riot police. Violence against women has increased in the country after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan decided to withdraw from Istanbul Convention, an international treaty to prevent and prosecute violence against women and domestic abuse, which was signed in 2011 with Turkey as the first signatory country.
