In the film the young boy Nilas is awakened from boredom in his school classroom by a voice. In a dream-like reverie, he performs a traditional test of manhood -- climbing a mountain to retrieve reindeer bones near an eagle’s nest. The Wind from the West encourages him on his journey and serves as the film’s narrator until -- Nilas is awoken from his dream by his teacher. This American / English language print is not complete but gives a good idea of the content of the film. “The Wind from the West“ was one of Sucksdorff’s earliest films after 1941’s En sommarsaga, and 1940’s August Rhapsody.
