Meiringen Air Base: Home of F/A-18 Hornet

Meiringen Air Base is an active military airfield of the Swiss Air Force in Unterbach west of Meiringen. Meiringen Air Base is important for the Swiss Air Force. It is one of the three remaining jet airfields in Switzerland after 2016 with the elimination of the Sion jet airfield, along with Payerne and Emmen. It is also the only airfield where the aircraft cavern is still in use during ongoing operations. The arrestor cable systems for F/A-18s and F-5s at both ends of the runway can be retracted flush into the runway so that they do not pose an obstacle to small aircraft.
