Joe “Guitar“ Hughes - Blues Man’s Guitar

Blues guitarist Joe “Guitar“ Hughes was a big fan of the blues early on. His heroes included people like Clarence “Gatemouth“ Brown and Johnny “Guitar“ Watson. Basically, anyone who had a good feeling and was playing with a good shuffle, he was a fan. In the 1960s Joe got a job working for Little Richard and the Upsetters before moving to the Bobby Blands band in the late 1960s. Like one of his idols, Johnny Copeland, he was not really sure of the future in Houston, but unlike Johnny, Mr. Hughes decided to stay. Unfortunately because of that decision there was a long dry spell where he could not play for much money. There followed a long period of drought, but Hughes finally returned to the limelight with a set for Black Top Records in 1989, (at the time he had inserted a “Guitar“ as his middle name, much like his old friend Watson) .
