Guano Apes were born in 1994 in Göttingen, Germany, founded by guitarist Henning Rümenapp, bassist Stefan Ude, and drummer Dennis Poschwatta. Later in the same year, Sandra Nasić, a female lead singer, joined the band.
In 1996, they won the “Local Heroes“ competition by VIVA, triumphing over 1,000 competitors with their hit “Open Your Eyes.“ This song marked their breakthrough. Following its success, they released their debut album, “Proud Like a God,“ in October 1997 under BMG and GUN/Supersonic Records. The album reached number 4 on the German charts and earned a platinum certification. Other popular singles from the album include “Lords of the Boards“ and “Rain.“ “Lords of the Boards“ was even created specifically for the 1998 European Snowboarding Championship.
The debut album’s release was followed by an extensive 18-month tour throughout Europe and the United States. Their song “Open Your Eyes“ was featured in the Warren Miller movie “Fifty“ (1999) and “Crusty 2000: The Metal Millennium“ (2000). In 1999, they contributed the non-album single “Don’t You Turn Your Back On Me“ to the Meschugge film soundtrack.
