Strange events have led her to believe that her house may be haunted. At night, floorboards squeak as if someone is walking through the room, lights come on and off with no apparent reason and explanation, and the flickering shadow of a woman in white can be seen in the outhouse. The detectives do not believe in ghosts, and so seek to explain these events employing logic and deduction. However, a series of murders nearby cannot be a coincidence and must obviously be connected to the secrets in Madame Shestakova’s house.
