Afterwards, things fell frightening silent for him for quite a while as a result of artistic questioning and personal problems. But now, fifteen years on, D’Angelo is literally back and in top form. His new album Black Messiah (2015) has been dubbed a masterpiece and the show that the king of ‘groove, croon and swoon’ brought to Amsterdam earlier this year was a sensual, romping, sometimes raunchy and completely unforgettable soul spectacle.
