Friedrich von Amerling ( 1803 - 1887 ) was a painter from Austria. He is, together with Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, one of the most renowned portrait painters of the nineteenth century. Friedrich von Amerling was born into the family of Franz Amerling, a silver and gold wire worker, and his wife Theresia Kargl. INAmerling studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under Josef Redl the Younger from 1815 to 1824. Following that, he studied at the Josef Klieber School of Engravers before moving on to Hubert Maurer and Karl Gselhofer’s “historical foundations of drawing“ program. Friedrich von Amerling travelled to Prague in 1824 to live with his uncle Heinrich and studied at the local academy under Josef Bergler the Younger until 1826. Amerling spent 1827-1828 in London, when he was significantly influenced by Thomas Lawrence. Amerling later visited Paris and Rome, where he worked for Horace Vernet.
