Thank you :) Born in Vienna of a Jewish father, Josef Krips (1902-1974) was educated at the same school as Karl Böhm (1894-1981) and George Szell (1897-1970), that of the Ukrainian professor Eusebius Mandyczevski. He became an assistant to Felix Weingartner, and retained the rigor, elegance and objectivity of his interpretations. After the Anschluss, he was forbidden to conduct during the war; it was up to him to revive Viennese musical life from 1946 onwards, when Böhm, Krauss and Karajan were temporarily unwelcome. Josef Krips was one of the most admired and beloved conductors of our century, especially for his legendary interpretations of Mozart (of whom he recorded five operas and some twenty symphonies in what would have become a complete recording if death had not interrupted it). He was also an inspired interpreter of other Viennese masters, such as Franz Schubert. Along with Karl Böhm, he is considered the heir of the Austrian musical tradition, made of lightness, joy and rigor.
