[Video 9.6] Unit 9, BBC Culture, Exercise 6 Two very different schools, Part 2 N = Narrator K = Kara N: Another kind of alternative school is one that focuses on special needs. In the UK there are fourteen schools which specialise in teaching dyslexic children. Our reporter, Kara – a dyslexic herself, talks about her visit to one of these schools. K: I’m really kind of excited about seeing a school that specialises in something that I’ve had throughout my life. N: Shapwick is a private school with 170 boys and girls. The classes are very small, so the teacher can focus on the needs of particular students. The first class that Kara attends is an English lesson. Dyslexia doesn’t just affect reading and spelling. It can also affect your short-term memory. Here, students learn new words by linking them to colours, shapes and stories. This makes it easier for them to remember the new words.
