Jure Grando, also known as Giure Grando, is often cited as one of the first historical figures described as a vampire. He lived in the 17th century in Istria, which is now part of modern-day Croatia. According to local legend, after Grando’s death in 1656, he allegedly returned from the grave and began terrorizing the village.
Reports say that for 16 years after his death, Grando would rise from his grave at night, knock on doors, and anyone who answered would die within a few days. The local villagers eventually exhumed his body and found it to be perfectly preserved. They tried various methods to get rid of him, including driving a stake through his heart and decapitating him, which reportedly put an end to his nocturnal activities.
Grando’s story is one of the earliest recorded instances of vampire folklore in Europe and is a significant part of vampire mythology.
