Attacks on Afghan schools soar

Nearly half of Afghanistan’s school-age children are out of school and hundreds of institutions have closed because of the war with the Taliban and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS). This is hampering efforts to improve education, in a country with one of the worst literacy rates in the world.
