The First Bachata (Bolero Campesino Dance) 🇩🇴

💃🕺 Learn how to dance online! Aprende a bailar por internet! Bachata via Bolero This is the early Bachata version of Jose Manuel Calderon’s “Que Sera de Mi“ also known as Condena. At the time of the first recording in the Dominican Republic, Bachata was not yet established as a genre in the music industry. This Antillean bolero, with its roots in Cuba’s Trova music “Bolero Guajiro“, was first known in D.R. as “Bolero Campesino“ then later known by several other nicknames including “Musica De Amargue“. It officially gained its name “Bachata“ in the early 1970s although it carried a negative stigma caused by its controversial past. Nonetheless, it has naturally developed into a beautiful music and dance that is widely accepted and enjoyed around the world. The original Bachata dance resembled the Bolero in its timing, shapes/figures, musical structure, and instrumentations, but there are many features that make Bachata unique which made it imperative that it got its own name. The main musical difference is the transition from the maracas to the guira which can be played with more agility, and the added syncopated note in the baseline this gives the music a different color. Consequentially, this added more color to the dance including a sharper break from the steps as opposed to the more subtle glide/drag from its predecessors. Bachata draws a lot from its Cuban roots in Bolero and Son, but also from its Dominican counterpart- Merengue. In this video, we attempt to draw the connection between Bachata and its most direct predecessor Bolero Campesino.
