The Elder Scrolls Online™: Greymoor (Original Game Soundtrack) Title: Full Soundtrack Released On: August 19, 2020 Composed By: Brad Derrick Arranged By: Brad Derrick Published By: Bethesda Softworks The Elder Scrolls franchise is well-known for its musical legacy, and while Elder Scrolls Online doesn’t have the efforts of Jeremy Soule (aside from the theme) behind it, composers Brad Derrick and Rik Schaffer have stepped up to put out some memorable tunes. The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor (Original Game Soundtrack) is an album containing new musical arrangements that were created for The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor. Similarly to previous games, while most of the soundtrack is new, a few of the tracks contain motifs that have appeared in the earlier games. Brad Derrick’s approach for Greymoor is a largely orchestral soundscape with heavy emphasis on vocal work (gruff male chorus, lilting boy soprano, cooing female voice) as well as violin/cello solos resulting in a surprisingly tonal affair that rarely dips into the kind of horror-action writing one might expect. With the exceptions of “Blackreach Rising“ and “Terror by Torchlight“, Derrick largely keeps the musical tapestry of Greymoor devoid of action material and instead crafts an utterly delicious tonal Gothic soundscape, one that calls to mind Danny Elfman, Howard Shore and Jerry Goldsmith in equal measures. The primary three-note theme (“Mists of Morthal“) bears a similar structure to Elfman’s Sleepy Hollow as does the female and boy soprano vocal writing while the use of staggered minor key brass chords are clearly inspired by Shore’s signature style of writing. The darkly playful nature of “That First Drop of Blood“, “Skyrim’s Dark Secret“ and “Thirst in the Deep“ recalls Goldsmith’s The Haunting, particularly the icy string performances. Of course all of these comparisons should not be taken as criticism, quite the contrary in fact, they should be seen as high praise that Derrick is able to clearly pay homage to these other composers while never causing Greymoor to feel like anything but his own musical vision. While Greymoor may be relatively short and suffer from a non-conclusion ending on album, Derrick’s writing is still of the highest quality and the lush Gothic soundscape he conjures for this latest adventure is top tier. While horror tinged scores typically are not for all sensibilities, the predominantly tonal nature of Greymoor makes it a highly recommended title to explore.
