This video is from one of eight DVDs of the Sydney World Shakuhachi Festival 2008 (WSF08), created by Lindsay Dugan and produced by Riley Lee. In this video, Ajikan 阿字観 is performed by Reibo Aoki II 二代青木鈴慕, a Living National Treasure of Japan, at the City Recital Hall in Sydney. in 2008. It was one of the last live performances that Aoki made. Ajikan is among the most revered of the shakuhachi honkyoku 本曲. The title refers to an esoteric practice of the Shingon Buddhist sect. Simply put, it involves meditating on a tiny light or golden Buddha in one’s heart, becoming ever bigger and brighter, until this warm light of compassion encompasses the entire universe. This series of videos allow us to relive some of the main concerts and workshops held during Sydney’s World Shakuhachi Festival 2008.
