Sridevi became a heroine at the age of 13 and ruled the Telugu, Tamil & Malayalam film industries for years. She made her Hindi film debut at the age of 16 with ‘Solvaa Saawan’ but the film flopped. While she continued to win accolades in the South, she made a ‘dhamakedar’ comeback in Hindi films with ‘Himmatwala’ (1983), a film that changed the trend and grammar of filmmaking in Hindi films. ‘Sadma’ (1983) released soon after ‘Himmatwala’ and Sridevi proved to the world that she could be a darling of the masses of the classes. The kind of popularity Sridevi achieved in the 1980s was unprecedented for any Hindi film actress. ‘Nagina’ & ‘Mr. India’ made her a screen goddess while ‘Chandni’ & ‘Chaalbaaz’, (both in 1989) re-iterated the fact that the labels like ‘The Queen Bee’ or ‘Lady Amitabh Bachchan’ given to her by the media was no exaggeration after all.
