Monkeyman is an unlikely, yet brilliant 11-track collaborative work between US rapper Kurious and Finnish DJ and production duo Cut Beetlez, made up of HP Lovescratch and DJ J-Man. The album features guest appearances from Ceaz Da God, Yahzeed the Divine and Homeboy Sandman. Born Jorge Alvarez, Kurious is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent, and grew up in New York’s Upper West Side. In 1993, he appeared on Pete Nice and DJ Richie Rich’s album Dust to Dust. The duo helped Kurious get a record deal with Columbia Records via Bobbito and Nice’s Hoppoh imprint. In 1992, he released his first single, Walk Like a Duck. Then, having signed with Sony Music, Kurious released his critically acclaimed debut album A Constipated Monkey, quickly gaining true respect among Hip Hop diehards and applauded by fans of the New York underground scene. Kurious then withdrew almost as quickly as he arrived, only making two guest appearances (El Gran Combo by Main One, and Independence Day by Lower Life Forms) and released no solo material between 1995 and 1998: Making him an aloof and mysterious figure in the game. He re-emerged in 1999 on the MF DOOM song ’?’ from the album Operation: Doomsday. Kurious then released a new single All Great in 2001, and began making more frequent guest appearances. In 2009, he released his second studio album, II. Other than a regular contributor to MF DOOM projects over the years (and KMD before), Kurious has worked with the likes of Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, MF Grimm, MC Serch and Homeboy Sandman. A true master of his craft, Kurious still effortlessly delivers his clever, often humorous, Latino flow, but at times on the Monkeyman LP, like he’d downed a vat of café solo before grabbing the MIC. * * * For the last decade, Cut Beetlez have been putting in work collaborating with different emcees and creating their own releases at a steady pace, including EP team ups with Hip Hop traditionalists The Good People and Nice Guys. After their celebrated 2020 debut LP What Beetlez?, for which they recruited emcees like Guilty Simpson, Rah Digga, El da Sensei, J-Live and Reks, the Finnish producer duo have dropped numerous digital and physical releases including Jazz Spastiks Vs Cut Beetlez - an instrumental album opening the door to instrumentation (namely keyboards and brass). That project further encouraging them to take on Jazz with their Cut Beetlez Quartet LP BOOM…Free! with Rodney Chapman (AKA Godfather Don). Often focused on making albums that carry a theme, they bring an authentic and nostalgic heavy boombap sound to their music.
