What started out as a simple leisure project, ended up into probably the biggest thing I’ve created in years. I’ve had this animatic plotted out in my head for about a year, you know when you hear a song and imagine your characters playing out the lyrics? That’s exactly what happened here, haha! These are the characters from my own comic, titled “Africa“: Bibi the caracal (“Varian“), and Mosi, the leopard (“Cassandra“). CONTEXT: During the story, Mosi is separated from his mother, Africa, and is attacked and severely injured by a lion. Miraculously, he manages to survive, but upon reuniting with his mother, he finds out that she has adopted a serval kitten, named Mondo. Believing that she has forsaken him and left him for dead, Mosi is overcome by bitterness and resentment toward her and her “new son“. Bibi the caracal, who had previously found Mosi injured and nursed him back to health, and who has a few skeletons in her closet as well, tries to reason with him, to steer him on the right path again... *Quick note: in the comic, Bibi the caracal is actually female, while Mosi the leopard is male. Their genders were swapped to better fit the roles and lyrics of the song :) Need even more context, or want to see how the story ends? Go read the comic! :D Seriously, please do! The entire comic is available online for free, on DeviantART and on Webtoon, links at the top of the description! If you’re feeling generous and want to support the comic further, please check out my PATREON, where you can read comic pages four weeks in advance! Or, for the folks who love reading physical books, “Africa“ is also available in print on my ETSY! All links are at the top! Regarding the animatic itself, this was so. much. work. I began animating this in Photoshop on a Surface Pro tablet, and let me tell you, it became really challenging, really fast. I ended up with a 780MB file, containing over 800 layers, drawn in a little under five months. At the start, you can see me messing around with the program, since I had never animated in Photoshop before, and the sequences are a bit rougher than those at the end. Toward the end, the tablet lagged and overheated, and PS dropped tons of frames whenever I hit play, and this is only just a rough animatic xD I cannot fathom what a fully fledged animation would do to it xD Speaking of, seeing this as a full animation would be absolutely bonkers. I have a background in comics and storyboarding, so that is mostly what I focused on for this video, and I have never properly animated before. But if any of you are interested, I would love to turn this into a MAP (Multi Animator Project) someday! Would anyone like to join it? :) Please let me know your thoughts in the comments, along with your opinion of how this animatic came out! Is it good? bad? Too on the nose? Too chaotic? What was your favorite part? Your least favorite? What would you change about it? After working on it for so long, I want to know EVERYTHING xD I truly hope you enjoy this! Thank you for your patience and for sticking around to see this video come to life, it’s my pride and joy! ...And there’s more where this came from. 👀 _____ -Audio: “Nothing Left To Lose“, from Disney’s “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure“, copyright to Disney Animation / The Walt Disney Company, song performed by Jeremy Jordan and Eden Espinosa -“Africa“ comic and characters (c) Maura Pompili “Panthera Arven“ -Time taken: 5 months -Drawn and animated in Adobe Photoshop CC at 12fps
