Mourning Dove’s nest building and feeding chicks crop milk
The pair of mourning doves can quickly throw together a loose platform of sticks in just a few hours. The construction may be finished in a single morning or spread over a couple of days. Nests are commonly built in shrubs, conifers, and deciduous trees. In the absence of trees, doves will nest on the ground, on building ledges, and even on chimneys. Both parents will take turns incubating the two eggs. The eggs hatch after 14 days. By two weeks old, the young grow significantly and show fluffy feathers. Crop milk is a secretion from the lining of the crop of parent birds (both male and female) that is fed to young birds. They are found among all pigeons and doves where they are referred to as pigeon milk.
