Splitting firewood on large rocks was merely to draw attention to the fact that the ax never goes all the way through the wood. Instead the blocks are easily pried apart as the ax is ’flicked’ sideways with a small wrist movement at the moment of contact. This technique allows anything from soft earth to a concrete floor to serve as a functional base on which to split wood.
