This collaboration between directors Bronwen Parker-Rhodes and Sam peers in from the fringes of the sub-zero Caspian Sea into Aktau, a major seaport city in Kazakhstan, providing an insight into a complex mix of the past and present that few outsiders witness or know exists. With an air of displacement and a nomadic feeling lingering from its past, Aktau is a city of contradictions – breathtakingly beautiful, yet barren, with a wild and unique landscape. Quietly studying the beauty in Aktau’s extremities, the film seeks to explore the culture, isolation and daily life in this small part of Kazakhstan.
