David Whitfield sings ’The Bridge of Sighs’

It was the winning of a talent contest and the start of a recording career in 1953 that set David Whitfield on the road to fame, making him one of the most popular and successful UK singers of the 1950s. ’The Bridge of Sighs’ was his third single and the first one to get into the Top 10 in October 1953. The composer was British song-writer Billy Reid who had quite a number of hits to his name. David Whitfield’s biggest hit came the following year, with the million-seller ’Cara Mia,’ but like so many other ballad singers of the day his recording career was adversely affected by the arrival of Elvis Presley and others in the rock-and-roll era. Nevertheless his best recordings are always worth hearing again and as I think this is one of them it is duly uploaded here!
