KING KONG APPEARS IN EDO (1938) Surviving Footage 江戸に現れたキングコング

About a month ago, I was visiting Japan and met a friend of my grandfather’s who is an avid film collector. The man let me browse though his collection, as I stumbled upon a very small reel simply titled “King Kong“. I asked him what it was, and he replied that he didn’t even remember owning it. I decided to give it a quick watch, and to my shock, it was footage from the supposedly lost 1938 Kaiju film “King Kong Appears in Edo“. (江戸に現れたキングコング) The reel was just over thirty seconds long, but the quality was in pretty good shape for a film that’s over 70 years old, and it gives a good glimpse of the titular character, who does not resemble his American inspiration at all. He was amazed that he was carrying a small clip from a film long thought to be lost. Here is hoping the rest can be found! Please note that I have cleaned the picture up the best I possibly could with my cheap program! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, of course it’s fake, but stop using the shot of the man with the rifle as evidence. Firearms existed well before the Edo period.
