From a young age, I’ve noticed a disparity between the emotions I feel and those experienced by my peers. Concepts like love and empathy always seemed distant and unfamiliar to me. Communication has always been challenging, especially when attempting to provide emotional support to those closest to me. I felt emotionally colorblind, unable to grasp the full spectrum of human experience. Over the years, I’ve been labeled as “cold“ and “callous.“ As a teen, I was terrified that I might even be a sociopath, which led me to actively avoid mental health professionals out of fear of what diagnosis I might receive. Only in the last few years, amidst the larger discussion regarding neurodiversity, have I come to accept, and even embrace, the person I am. “Monochrome“ stands as one of the most personal works I’ve ever created. I hope it will mean as much to you as it does to me and offer comfort to those who feel the same.
