Being premiered in 14 March of 1958 by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tor Mann. This work is clearly, even at a superficial level, owing to the sizeable proportions of the piece, which far exceed any of the conventions associated with the genre, indeed, lay claim to symphonic weight. Nonetheless, this large-scale work, characterized by dynamic culminations and passages of extremely detailed writing (although it is often pervaded by melody as well), is based on just a few motifs. These are woven together into a dense network of musical crossreferences that sometimes extend beyond the confines of a single move ment.
