On Monday, after trade unions turned their customary Labor Day marches into anti-government demonstrations against the raising of the retirement age, French police opened fire with tear gas and engaged in combat with protesters in Paris and other cities. Violence broke out in several cities on the fringes of the main union-led marches, leaving at least 108 police injured and 291 people detained nationwide, according to the interior minister, Gérald Darmanin. 111 people were detained in Paris, and 25 police officers were hurt. He claimed that a police officer was struck by a petrol bomb and sustained severe burns to his hands and face.
