African Leaders Unite in Condemning Israeli War on Gaza

African leaders condemn Israeli war and occupation, but fail to broker Somalia-Ethiopia peace talks. AU reform emphasized. The two-day summit was marked by divisions, but leaders found near-absolute consensus on Palestine, condemning the Israeli war on Gaza and calling for an end to the occupation of Palestinian lands. Renewed commitment to ending conflicts in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, the Sahel, and the Democratic Republic of Congo was also made. However, the summit failed to get Somali and Ethiopian leaders to hold direct discussions on the controversial Ethiopian maritime agreement with Somaliland. The AU’s internal fragmentation remains unresolved, and leaders agreed that drastic internal reform is overdue to meet the challenges the organization was created to address.
