High-Speed Police Chase Comes To an End After Suspect Crashes into a Pole

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Dayton, Ohio — On June 7, 2023, around 8:00 p.m., Officers in Dayton observed, 57-yer-old William Gerald “Gerry“ Hefner driving a red pickup truck. The officer began to pursue the truck, and the driver fled. Dashcam footage shows the truck speeding through stop signs and red lights, nearly colliding with several cars. At times, Hefner goes across yards and grassy areas to avoid the cop pursuing him. According to court documents, the chase reached speeds of more than 100 mph. The chase ended when Hefner took a wide turn and hit a pole near the intersection of Salem Avenue and Denlinger Road in Trotwood, according to the footage. Hefner was arrested after the crash. On Friday, Hefner was charged with two counts of murder, three counts of felonious assault and one count each of tampering with evidence and failure to comply with the order of a police officer in the death of 48-year-old Matthew Smith of Dayton. Hefner is being held at the Montgomery County Jail. His bail is set at $1 million.
