Op-Ed Video: Tayab Ali examines the Global South’s support for Palestine at the ICJ

Tayab Ali, Director of the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians, scrutinises the unfolding drama at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, where the world’s gaze is fixed on the Israel-South Africa genocide case. Ali highlights the stark disparity between the positions of Israel and South Africa, drawing attention to the alarming rhetoric and legal gymnastics that are widening this chasm. The case, marked by Israel’s denial of international law violations despite overwhelming evidence, underscores the tragic reality in Gaza: over 24,000 Palestinians were killed, with the majority being women and children. Ali stresses the urgent need for the ICJ to impose a ceasefire as a provisional measure, warning of the grave consequences of inaction - a surge in deaths, displacement, and starvation, and an escalation of violence across the region. Furthermore, Ali critiques the timing of recent US and UK strikes on Yemen, suggesting that these actions might serve as a strategic diversion from the ICJ proceedings. He also sheds light on the growing divide in international support, as nations align either with Israel or South Africa, reflecting a broader contestation of the rules-based international order. Ali’s analysis culminates in a call for the ICJ to make a historic decision: to enforce a ceasefire involving UN troops in Gaza, the West Bank, and the borders, thereby halting the violence and setting a precedent for justice and peace.
