Watch as Vladimir Lenin statue is torn down to cheers in Kharkiv, Ukraine

Subscribe here: A large crowd gathered in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Sunday to watch the toppling of a statue of former Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. The statue of Lenin is the largest one in Ukraine, and was pulled down by ropes in front of a jubilant crowd waving the Ukrainian flag and singing the national anthem. The act was one of many in a series which started in Kiev in December 2013 during the pro-European protests. One protestor said because of Lenin, Ukraine was in poverty for over 10 year and hopes for no memory of him in the city at all. Kharkiv was one of the several Eastern Ukrainian cities in which pro-Russian activists tried to organise anti-Ukrainian movement earlier this year, but didn’t succeed. Report by Claire Lomas.
