Chechnya - Troops withdraw from Grozny

(29 Aug 1996) T/I: 11:15:51 Jubilant Chechens in Grozny on Thursday (29/8) cheered as Russian and rebel troops continued to withdraw from the battered capital. Some 4,000 Russian troops and 2,000 rebels have withdrawn from the capital over the past 24 hours and other units from both sides are also preparing to leave. A joint police force made up of Russian and Chechen rebel troops was controlling areas of Grozny evacuated by the troops.
