The 3rd ID (M) commander, MG Buford Blount acting upon the suggestion of his 2nd BDE commander, Colonel Perkins, wisely decides to not clear Baghdad by slow, plodding dismounted infantry clearing buildings one or two at a time--instead using “thunder runs“ to slice off segments of the city by tracked, armored, maneuver to seize control of key, governmental centers-of-gravity (COGs).
