Ancient History of Yoga

Yoga is very old - writings are earliest in India, with historical records of yogic sculpture and art dating to more than 5000 years ago. Far older cave art and petroglyphs from around the world depict symbolic human and animal figures (theriomorphs) that could be interpreted as in meditative postures. Many of these are extremely similar to yoga poses. This is speculative - perhaps yoga-type meditative postures were global more than 40,000 years ago, when humans shared art, culture and technology freely.
