Club Helmbreker is a musical project featuring an informal and fluid collective of musicians. The purpose of the project is to reinterpret hits, hidden gems and rarities by another artist in one day. Club Helmbreker was initiated by Huub Reijnders, Martijn Bosman, Yorick van Norden and Mathijs Ton in April 2014. It was in early July 2014 that the Club Helmbreker team met up with a group of faces old and new to follow-up the successful Beck edition of the project with something new and exciting. Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney is among the most successful pop artists of the 20th century and has had more hits than any of his peers. But what the general public doesn’t know and the press doesn’t always acknowledge is that behind Paul’s carefree image and the string of hits lies the most interesting, creative, sometimes experimental and often overlooked body of work one can imagine. And thus, CLUB HELMBREKER presents THE OTHER SIDE OF McCARTNEY was born! After the lukewarm critical reception of Paul McCartney’s debut album McCartney, he decided to switch gears. Out went the homemade lo-fi approach and in came New York’s top session players and engineers, one of the city’s best studios and a bunch of great songs. The result was an amazing album called RAM. The album was a worldwide hit, despite some pretty negative reviews. Throughout the years the album only grew in stature, so that by the time the album was re-released in 2012 reviews were raving about the album’s genius and one reviewer even called it something along the lines of ’the mother of all indie rock albums’ One of the craziest songs on the album is Monkberry Moon Delight. The vocals on the original are simply so stunning that no one ever had ever dared to cover the song. That is, until a very daring young man called Rilan Ramhane came along. And not only did he put in an amazing throat-shredding performance; he also made the song totally his own. Among the featured musicians are (ex-)members of DI-RECT, The Kik, bewilder, Baskerville, Guus Meeuwis, The Hype, houses, Ape Not Mice, Gotcha! and Rilan & The Bombardiers.
