Believe 4. 5G As the youngest member of the dirtybird family, LA-based producer Justin Jay has supported some of the worlds biggest electronic music artists, from Disclosure to George Fitzgerald, always bringing a future-facing, hyper-pop tinged aesthetic and wrapping it with mainstream sensibility, meaning there are moments for everyone. Encapsulating the rollercoaster of sounds explored in his sets, his 1ØPILLS debut follows an outing on London based label childsplay where the producer jumped from west-coast garage to electro and Baltimore club-techno, and here the producer keeps his brand of digital age hyper-electronics firmly fixated on fun. Blissed-out, classic Ibiza sounds blend with arcade nostalgia on a raised tempo deep house rhythm, bringing with it images of distant suns melting into the ocean. ‘Warp’ exists as its polar opposite - a damaging cut of hardcore inspired broken-techno that takes the frantic energy of a chopped hyper-pop vocal and places it on a 4x4 rhythm. Existing somewhere between the energies of classic Chicago house and classic Chicago footwork, ‘Believe’ is a fast, stripped-back groove that says less is more. Paradise Garage on speed, it’s as nostalgic as it is contemporary. ‘5G’ closes the EP with a sequence of bleeps, bloops and hypnotic-techno designed to be lost in.
