Delta City Blues - Solo Sax Intro

Delta City Blues - Solo Sax Intro As Recorded by Michael Brecker Performed by Jacam Manricks Up until recently I had largely slept on the tenor saxophone style of Michael Brecker. My primary horn has been alto saxophone for the past 25 , I decided to transcribe Brecker’s improvised solo intro on Delta City Blues, a performance I had previously admired from afar, as a way of learning something new. I thought it would be pretty easy too. It was not! Starting with the articulation of the first 3 notes, (reminiscent of Bird’s Parker’s Mood), the scoops and ‘doits’ (perhaps Hodges-isms?), harmonics and multi-phonics (Trane?), and wide intervallic melody, this turned into a real challenge. This was because I also didn’t want to write it out, until I could play it. Committing solos to memory like this has proven to be more beneficial over the years. I learned a LOT! If you’re interested in a PDF including multiphonic and harmonic fingerings, and other techniques I used to mimic Brecker’s style you can purchase it for $ from my web site:
