When knitting colorwork socks (aka fair isle or stranded), a common problem is keeping tension on the floating yarn from being too tight, especially when going from one needle to the other. By knitting the sock inside out, you force the floats to take the longest path around the outside of the sock and make it easier to keep them loose enough. When knitting inside out, you knit across the back needle instead of the front, otherwise everything else stays the same.
