Ville Valo has said that this is his heaviest album, with music comparable to that of Metallica. Venus Doom has the longest and shortest song on HIM, these being “Sleepwalking Past Hope“ (10 :01) and the acoustic “Song or Suicide“ (1: 10). Ville Valo told Kerrang! that some songs were written in the same period. Venus Doom is HIM’s first studio album to feature a song in which the only instrument is an acoustic guitar, in addition to the voice. The album contains nine songs representing the nine circles of hell from Dante’s Divine Comedy, the acoustic version of Bleed Well references this. The acoustic version of Bleed Well contains a verse that was removed from the final recording, which contained the line ’we’ll descend to the ninth and last, where we’re judged’, referring to the next track, Cyanide Sun. On September 26, the album debuted at No. 12 in the US, with 38,000 copies sold. It reached 31 in the UK. In Finland it reached number 2 and in Germany it debuted with 3. It is the only HIM album that has a female ejaculation among its songs, which caused controversy on this album. In the 50th edition of the Grammy ceremony, Ville Valo was nominated for Venus Doom. The cover was painted by artist David Harouni. Ville Valo bid on a Harouni painting at his New Orleans gallery, then asked if he could use it as a record sleeve. The painting is used in the normal edition of the album. “Passion’s Killing Floor“, featured on the “Transformers“ movie soundtrack. The song “The Kiss of Dawn“ is dedicated to a friend who committed suicide. Venus Doom received positive reviews from critics, with many commending the album’s heaviness and experimentation. During the summer of 2007, HIM toured across the United States as a part of Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution Tour, as well as opening for Metallica in Europe.
