DOOM - First Person Shooter [A recreation by DAR] | 60fps

SUPPORT / DONATE: -- DOOM: The Movie: The WAD: The Cover... (my first map too!) Say what you will about the 2005 DOOM movie, but the first-person sequence towards the end was pretty great. For five minutes, they gave us a glimmer of the DOOM we were hoping for. So that brings us to today’s video (this is the “Secret DOOM Cover“)! I’ve always loved this track, it just feels really Doomy. For a long time, this song was actually my go-to jam when playing an FPS and I was the (or one of the) last-standing in a match. Recording the guitars for this one was pretty easy to do, nice and simple. I think I spent more time mapping out the drums on this now that I think about it. I kept things pretty much the same as the original, since I wanted to be as faithful to this as I could. I just mainly beefed up the guitars, since I felt like the original really could’ve used some thicker-sounding guitars. I wound up layering some of the original’s synths on top of my own synths in some places. I also wound up sorta sampling the original’s “string“ sound (at 1:20 for example). Now for the video portion. I already decided I would try and re-enact the FPS sequence. I had also planned on finding a wad/map someone made of this sequence, but then I found out that such a thing didn’t exist. If it does, then I suppose my Google-fu just wasn’t strong enough! So I decided, “Well.. why don’t I just... make it myself then?“. I also figured it was about time I tried my hand at mapping, especially considering how important DOOM is to this channel. Plus this experience will probably come in handy for whenever I actually try and make RED PLANET into a proper wad. If I remember correctly, I think I worked on this map for like three days after completing either my “Death’s Bells“ cover or my “Into the Beast’s Belly“ cover. I wound up spending a lot of time re-watching the scene from the movie, so that I could try and faithfully recreate the layout. Fun bit of trivia, but I think that there’s actually a goof-up in the original. The part after the hatchet zombie didn’t make sense to me while I was studying the layout. Reaper winds up going in a circle, yet he doesn’t tread back into that previous hallway when chasing after that “imp“. So I had to improvise and made a couple of walls open up when I got to that part (2:00). After this, I have a whole newfound respect to the many mappers of the Doom community. I knew it was a lot of work before, but its a much different feeling when you actually do it yourself! So after I finished it, it was then time to rehearse the sequence. I needed to record this all in one take, no edits, no jumpcuts. Also, my apologies if any of you get motion sick, I think I got a bit carried away with the mouse movement in some parts. Probably the hardest parts in this video were both the Baron fight and the pinky fight at the end. I had to make sure I didn’t take too long fighting them, but I also didn’t want to take them out too quickly. I had to get it just right to match up with the music, to be close to how it was in the original scene. Another honorable mention for hard scenes was the part where I shoot the mirror at 1:40. I had countless rehearsals where I wasn’t centered in the mirror, or I actually somehow managed to miss my reflection... So I was really happy with how this take/video turned out. Anyways, I hope that this video was worthy of being the “mysterious, secret doooom cover“.
