Charlie Parker plays Bossa Nova (what if) is an attempt to answer Haruki Murakami’s question: how would Charlie Parker have sounded had he not died in 1955, but after several years of recovery, returned to playing the saxophone and, in 1963, when bossa nova was popular, released a bossa nova album?
In spite of having its origins in a Murakami story, the album is not a perfect copy of the record he describes. Although the number of songs, the general atmosphere, and even the band’s instrumentation is the same, instead of using worn out jazz standards, we opted for original compositions. Additionally, in place of an alto saxophone, you will hear a tenor saxophone, which adds another layer of complexity to the question, “what if…”
