In the past, Westerners were often inclined to regard Buddhism as heathenish, based on worship of images and statues of the Buddha. In truth, the Buddha was as much a divine envoy to the peoples of the Far East as was the Christ in Palestine six centuries later. The Buddha was the spiritual leader for the East in similar way that the Christ fulfilled that function for the West.
