Toxic Crusaders (Genesis) Full Longplay The alien race of Smogulans, led by Czar Zoster, is invading the Earth, namely the town of Tromaville. The only force that can stop the invasion are the Toxic Crusaders. Toxic Crusaders for Genesis, based on the animated TV series, is a side-scrolling beat-’em-up. The player can choose to play as either Toxie, NoZone or Junkyard, with no actual difference for the gameplay, which consists of running around beating aliens with melee or distance attacks and sometimes jumping over or evading deadly gaps or pools of water. As the action moves from the streets of Tromaville through the Toxic Park, Smogulan space ship and other locations, leading up to the palace of Czar Zoster on Smogula planet, the traps get progressively harder to avoid. In certain levels the protagonist can use a motorized skateboard, helicopter or a motor boat. There are a number of power-ups to be found, including limited invincibility and speed-up. Toxic Crusaders refers to a series of side-scrolling, beat ’em up/shoot ’em up/platform video games based on the American cartoon series Toxic Crusaders (1991), and Troma Entertainment’s 1984 film The Toxic Avenger. The games were developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Game Boy and Sega Genesis, respectively by TOSE, Realtime Associates, and Infogrames, and released in 1992. Bandai released the NES and Game Boy games, while Sega handled the Genesis game. A Super NES version was planned by Bandai around at the same time with the NES and Game Boy versions but it was never released for unknown reasons. On April 30, 2013, Kaufman appeared on an episode of Angry Video Game Nerd, reviewing the video game Toxic Crusaders on various consoles. Kaufman also appears in Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie as himself, and was interviewed by James Rolfe. Toxic Crusaders is a beat-’em-up game for the Sega Mega Drive based on the cartoon series of the same name (which itself is inspired, perhaps bizarrely, by the violent comedy horror movie The Toxic Avenger and its sequels). It was only released in North America. Toxie and his pals fight the slime of the century! Gangs of Radiation Rangers, sent to Earth to annihilate the Toxic Crusaders, are readying the planet for a takeover by alien Smogulans. Tromaville is up to its trash can lids in glowing gunk! The nuclear superheroes wage a clean-up war and accidentally board the Smogulan spacecraft. They end up battling for their lives on the most polluted planet in the universe!
