Eye Anesthesia Retrobulbar block

Many ophthalmologic procedures can be performed with retrobulbar blockade. This block can provide adequate anesthesia, akinesia and control of introcular pressure as well as postoperative analgesia. Most commonly, a 25 gauge, 35mm needle is used to reduce the risk of passage beyond the ciliary ganglion. Advancement too far can result in puncture of the vessels in the apex of the orbit.
