Meet the Porcupine You Can’t Touch: America’s 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit is Special Operations Capable (26th MEU (SOC)). It is an Air-Ground Task Force with a strength of 2200-2400 Marines at full strength which are organized into Battalion Landing Teams (BLTs), a Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB), a Combat Logistics Detachment (CLD), and a Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) for aviation support. It has deployed extensively and is known for its capability to swiftly project power and respond to a wide range of missions including Combat Operations, Disaster Relief, and Humanitarian Assistance. It is a potent, forward-deployed, and crisis response force that can be rapidly tailored to meet the specific needs of many different missions or theaters of operations. They are forward-deployed aboard amphibious assault ships (LHDs or LHA), which give them the flexibility, mobility, and firepower needed to conduct their missions. The 26th MEU is a highly adaptable and rapidly deployable force that can respond to any crisis and conduct operations virtually anywhere in the world.
