The hairstyles of 2020 look nothing like what was popular in 2010. Why do styles change?
Art historian Wilhelm Worringer suggested that the styles we find appealing are often a response to something we feel is lacking in society.
For instance, after World War II, a world that had experienced so much chaos and destruction craved stability and reliability. This longing was reflected in the rise of mid-century modern furniture, known for its clean lines and simplistic design. It provided a sense of order and calmness in a world that was recovering from turmoil.
The 1980s were characterized by bold, extravagant hairstyles, perhaps as a way to express freedom and individuality during a time of economic growth and relative peace. In contrast, today’s hairstyles might be simpler or more natural, possibly reflecting a societal desire for authenticity and environmental consciousness in an increasingly digital and artificial world.
