MAYPOLE - s/t 1971 US LP `Colossus` Killer Heavy Blues Psych £200
Here we have the obscure self titled US release from the Psych Rock band `Maypole` released on the small MGM offshoot label `Colossus`(CS-1007) in was their only album as the band fell apart within a year and with no real promotion it sold poorly making it a great collectible today. A copy sold in 2022 for £205 so well worth looking out for. Amazingly they crammed 50 minutes of music onto the vinyl (which was a feat in itself back then). Musically it reminded me of a heavier style Badfinger which is a great recommendation in itself

Formed in Baltimore in late 1969, Maypole released their debut LP on Colossus in 1971 and their sound was Bluesy hard psych rock but with strong harmony melodies. Maypole hired Pat Perticon as their manager and he procured their recording contract, he promised a finished product in three days. The resulting album, as great as it sounds, was a disappointment to the band in terms of quality but stands up very well today, in quick succession, Perticone absconded with all of the advance money and so never completed the venture, so there were no member names anywhere on the album, including songwriting credits. Their label’s closure and a relocation to Holland would lead to the band’s break-up in 1972.
