Fame, however, was not gained overnight. David Garrett worked hard to become a violin Olympus. He and his father worked daily and his childhood was full of discipline. He was born into a family of a German lawyer and an American prima ballerina. At the age of 4, he started playing the violin. He won his first major prize only a year later, and at the age of seven he began his studies at the conservatory. By the age of ten, David was on stage with major international orchestras. He was not overlooked by the then German President, Richard von Weisäcker, who gave the eleven-year-old David his first Stradivari violin. He developed his talent by studying in London, also in collaboration with the British violinist Ida Haendel. The moniker of child prodigy followed him until his 20s, when he decided to go to the Juilliard School of Music in New York to study, leaving behind classical classical music concertizing.
